“According to the greenhouse warming theory, the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration caused by human activity, such as burning of fossil fuels, acts like the glass in a greenhouse to prevent the re-radiation of solar heat from near the Earth’s surface. Although such an effect exists, carbon dioxide is low on the list of greenhouse gases, accounting for at most 2 or 3 percent of the greenhouse effect. By far the most important greenhouse gas is water vapor. However, water in the form of clouds can reflect back solar radiation, causing temperature reduction. There are so many interrelated effects, that correlating global temperature to CO2 concentration is like attempting to predict the value of a hedge fund by the phases of the Moon.”

Na aanleiding van Rubens artikel “IJstijd in Europa kan op enkele maanden tijd losbarsten” en na van alles te hebben gelezen over de opwarming van de aarde en artikels over zo vele klimaatconferenties was ik het stilaan beu om het verhaal maar langs een kant te horen. Ik ben actief opzoek gegaan naar partijen die niet van dezelfde mening zijn als de populaire stroom van doomdenkers. Na enkele doelgerichte zoektermen te hebben ingedrukt en meerdere malen door te klikken van de ene site naar de andere, kwam ik op een wel merkwaardige blog/actua-site terecht. www.nujij.nl . Daar vond ik een artikel dat wel gerelateerd was met het doel van mijn zoektocht. “Zee rond Antarctica wordt kouder” luidde het bericht. Niet de inhoud daarvan, maar een reactie op het artikel trok mijn aandacht. Hierin stond een link naar een wetenschappelijk artikel dat onmiddellijk mijn interesse wekte door accurate bronvermelding, een kritische kijk en zelfreflectie. Ik raad aan het eens door te nemen want het zal je kijk op de hedendaagse berichtgeving rond het thema toch lichtjes beïnvloeden. Aangezien we als hooggeschoolden verwacht worden vloeiend meertalig te zijn denk ik niet dat dit een probleem vormt.
